Emmys: Fans irked as Shelley Duvall excluded from 'In Memoriam'
The 2024 Emmy Awards, held on Sunday (Monday IST) at Los Angeles's Peacock Theater, sparked controversy after the late actor Shelley Duvall was not included in the 'In Memoriam' segment. The tribute honored deceased television industry members such as Shannen Doherty, Bob Newhart, and Gena Rowlands. However, viewers were quick to notice that Duvall—who passed away in July at age 75—was conspicuously absent from the tribute.
Fans expressed disappointment over Duvall's exclusion
The omission of Duvall from the tribute segment led to an outcry on social media. One user questioned on X (formerly Twitter), "How did Shelley Duvall not make it into the segment?? #Emmys," while another expressed disbelief, "How could they forget Shelley Duvall?!" Meanwhile, another wrote, "How dare they not include my queen shelley duvall in the memorial at the Emmy's I'm pissed #Emmys, (sic)." The tribute section featured a performance by Jelly Roll on I Am Not Okay.
Duvall's television contributions and Emmy nomination
Some speculated that Duvall may have been overlooked due to her more prominent film career, including roles in The Shining, Popeye, 3 Women, and Annie Hall. However, she also had significant television credits such as appearances on shows like Maggie Winters, Faerie Tale Theatre, and Frasier. Notably, Duvall received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program in 1992 for her children's series Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories.
Other stars missing from Emmys's 'In Memoriam'
Duvall aside, Johnny Wactor, director Eleanor Coppola, and General Hospital star Tyler Christopher were all notably missing from this year's 'In Memoriam' segment. Their names, however, appeared on a much longer "In Memoriam" list on the Emmys website. Wactor—known for his role as Brando Corbin on General Hospital—was tragically shot and killed in an alleged attempted robbery on May 25 at the age of 37. He also had roles in shows such as NCIS, The OA, Station 19, and Westworld.
