What's the story

The 2027 Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 7, will introduce five new categories and significant changes to the existing ones. The changes were announced by the Grammys on their official website. Among the most notable alterations are modifications to the Best New Artist and Best Album categories. These adjustments aim to better reflect the evolving music industry landscape and artist development processes.

Category changes

Five new categories added

The new categories include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Latin Song. The existing category of Best R&B Performance has been revised to become Best R&B Solo Performance. Similarly, the former category of Best Folk Album is now known as Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Process updates

Changes in voting process

The 2027 Grammy Awards will also see changes in the voting process. A new option called "Ballot Plus" allows voting members with expertise in multiple genres to vote in up to 15 peer-related Categories, regardless of Field. This is an alternative to the traditional 10/3 voting structure. Moreover, the maximum number of times an artist can be submitted for Best New Artist has been increased from three to four.

Album updates

Recognition for songwriters and composers

Under the updated guidelines, the requirement for new recordings on an eligible album has been lowered from 75% to 66%, allowing more albums to qualify. Additionally, songwriters and composers of new material on winning albums in most genre categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and Achievement Certificates, similar to producers and engineers.
