'Tanu Weds Manu' universe to get a new film

Mitakshara Kumar, best known as an episodic director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi, is set to helm a new movie set within the Tanu Weds Manu universe. The project will be backed by Eros Universe and Rudrak Soma Jyoti. It is scheduled to begin production early next year in London, reported The Hindu.

The untitled film will reportedly be a "bold reinvention" of the popular romantic-comedy franchise. The outlet quoted the makers saying, "While moving away from its Kanpur roots, the new chapter aims to carry forward the irreverence, unpredictability, and emotional charge of the earlier films, this time on an expansive international stage." Kumar expressed her vision for the film as one that is "familiar in spirit but thrillingly fresh in its storytelling."

'Tanu Weds Manu' and its sequel: A brief recap
The original Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and its sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015) starred R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut. The first film followed the story of NRI doctor Manu, played by Madhavan, who falls in love with a free-spirited girl named Tanu, played by Ranaut. The sequel featured the couple four years into their marriage, growing weary of each other as Manu encounters Tanu's Haryanvi look-alike Kusum.
