'IC814: The Kandahar Hijack' recounts historic Indian Airlines hijacking
The plot of IC814: The Kandahar Hijack centers on the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814 on December 24, 1999. The flight, originally en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi, was hijacked and diverted to Kandahar in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Netflix describes the series as "The clock was ticking as the negotiations forged through; this is the story of those seven days which became the longest hijack in Indian history."
The show will also explore the hijacking aftermath
The hijacking had profound implications for India's stance on terrorism, leading to a shift in public opinion toward a no-compromise approach. However, the incident also raised questions about India's readiness to handle such situations. Additionally, Captain Devi Sharan, who piloted the flight alongside first officer Rajinder Kumar and flight engineer Anil Kumar Jaggia, recounted the horror in his book Flight into Fear - The Captain's Story. Rohit Shetty's Zameen and Kunal Shivdasani's Hijack are also loosely based on this incident.
