Nolan's 'The Odyssey' criticized by classicist Wilson over Zeus' law
Christopher Nolan's new film, The Odyssey, just dropped on July 17, and it's already got scholars talking.
Emily Wilson, a well-known classicist whose translation inspired the movie, called it "emotionally empty" and said the script was essentially a fun, but hollow, popcorn movie.
She also felt Nolan missed key themes like Zeus' Law, which she called out as a fulcrum point throughout the movie.

Not everyone agrees with Wilson, classicist Theo Nash pushed back, calling Wilson's arguments "baffling" and arguing she misunderstood the film.
National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates also thought Wilson was too harsh.
On the other hand, scholar Daniel Mendelsohn backed some of her points but praised the movie's visuals.
Meanwhile, all this buzz has sent Wilson's translation soaring to No. 3 on Amazon.
