Oscars 2026: 'Sinners' and 'Frankenstein' top the shortlist for visual effects
Oscar season is heating up!
The Academy just dropped its shortlists for the 98th Oscars, with nominations coming January 22, 2026, and the big ceremony set for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre.
Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Netflix's Frankenstein are leading the pack, showing up in categories like Makeup & Hairstyling, Cinematography, Casting, Sound, Visual Effects, and Original Score.
Who else is in the running?
Wicked: For Good is also making waves with nods in Cinematography, Sound, Visual Effects—and even two original songs.
Other films on the Visual Effects shortlist include Avatar: Fire and Ash, Jurassic World Rebirth, F1, and Superman.
International Feature Film highlights
Fifteen films from around the world are up for Best International Feature.
Standouts include Belen (Argentina), Homebound (India), The Secret Agent (Brazil), Kokuho (Japan), Palestine 36 (Palestine), plus entries from France, Germany, Iraq, Jordan, Norway, South Korea and Spain.
