What's the story

Telugu actor Ram Charan's Peddi has sparked yet another controversy, as the Adivasi Joint Action Committee for Tribal Rights has demanded the removal of derogatory words from the movie. The committee's Vizianagaram district president, Tummi Appala Raju Dora, said on Tuesday the use of words like "Kondana Kodaka" has hurt the sentiments of local tribal people. Calling for action by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), he also submitted a detailed petition to Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police AR Damodar.

Controversy escalation

Directors should consult tribal experts: Dora

Dora alleged that Peddi director Buchi Babu Sana has crossed all limits in his portrayal of tribal lives under the pretext of creative freedom. He suggested that directors and scriptwriters should consult tribal experts before making films to avoid controversy. Dora added that the use of such words is prohibited and could invite action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Director's statement

Director Sana promised to alter certain portions earlier

The film, which was released on June 4, has already been slammed for the objectification of Janhvi Kapoor's character. In response to the backlash, Sana had earlier said he had taken the feedback seriously and would modify the affected portions. "Cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected," he wrote on X. He apologized to those whose sentiments were hurt by his film.
