What's the story

A court found comedian-actor Russell Brand guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday. As per Page Six, a UK legal expert has now estimated that he could face an eight- to nine-year prison sentence. Kally Sahota, a senior solicitor and director at Sahota & Sahota Solicitors, told the outlet that he expects a significant custodial sentence for the 51-year-old following the guilty verdict.

Legal proceedings

'Final sentence is for the judge to decide'

Sahota said, "My estimate, based on the convictions and what is publicly known, would be in the region of eight or nine years, although the final sentence is for the judge to decide."

Rape can carry a life sentence in England and Wales, though Sahota said he would not expect Brand to get one.

The sentencing guidelines for rape range from four to 19 years in custody.

Legal implications

Sahota explained the 'totality' principle

The judge must also decide the sentences for Brand's three sexual assault convictions and whether they run concurrently with his rape sentence or consecutively.

"The court then applies the principle of 'totality' to ensure the overall sentence reflects all the offending and is proportionate," Sahota explained.

Prison life

Will Brand receive special treatment in prison?

Sahota also spoke about what Brand's prison life could be like.

He said there is no equivalent of the American white-collar prison system in England and Wales.

Instead, prisoners are assigned based on their security classification, risk, and available space.

"There will not be any special treatment given his celebrity status," Sahota said.

Case background

Brand was found guilty of multiple sexual assaults

Brand's legal troubles began in September 2023 when The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches published investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct by several women.

Despite denying the allegations, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation, and the Crown Prosecution Service authorized five initial charges in April 2025.

Brand pleaded not guilty throughout his trial.

He will be sentenced on November 9.
