Umrao Jaan director critiques Bhansali's Heeramandi

Entertainment

Muzaffar Ali, who directed the iconic film Umrao Jaan (1981), shared his thoughts on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Netflix series Heeramandi, calling it "nice but over-the-top" and "too palatial and rich."
He added, "That's a different thing and an over-the-top effort," after watching one episode.

'Umrao Jaan' vs 'Heeramandi'

Ali pointed out that both works are unique in their own ways.
While Umrao Jaan tells the story of a Lucknow courtesan-poetess with subtle textures and classic style, Heeramandi goes for a much more extravagant visual vibe.
Ali's approach focuses on details like textiles, making direct comparisons tricky.

Richa Chadha-Rekha connection

Even decades later, Umrao Jaan continues to inspire Bollywood.
Actor Richa Chadha recently said she looked up to Rekha's performance—especially the song "Ye Kya Jagah Hai"—when preparing for her own mujra in Heeramandi.
The film is still celebrated for its storytelling, iconic music by Khayyam, and Rekha's award-winning role.
