What's the story

The release of the much-anticipated Tamil film Vaa Vaathiyaar, starring Karthi and Krithi Shetty, has been postponed due to a court order over unpaid debts. The Madras High Court issued a stay on the film's release on Thursday after producer KE Gnanavel Raja failed to repay a loan of ₹10.35 crore taken from businessman Arjunlal Sundardas. The amount has since grown to ₹21.78 crore with interest.

Legal proceedings

'Vaa Vaathiyaar' release postponed after court's intervention

The Madras High Court intervened after the official assignee of Sundardas's estate sought to recover the unpaid loan. Despite Raja offering to pay ₹3.75 crore within 24 hours and providing property documents as collateral, the court rejected the proposal. The HC has now ordered a stay on Vaa Vaathiyaar's release across all platforms until the debt is repaid.

Film distribution

'Vaa Vaathiyaar' release date will be announced soon

Prathyangira Cinemas, the distributor of Vaa Vaathiyaar in the US, confirmed the film's postponement. The production house also announced on social media that Vaa Vaathiyaar will be "releasing soon" without addressing the debt issue. A new release date has not been announced yet. The film was initially scheduled for a January 2025 release but was later pushed to December 5 and then to December 12. The Madras HC intervened, leading to the postponement from December 12.

Film synopsis

'Vaa Vaathiyaar' plot and cast details

Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, is an action-comedy film that follows the story of DSP Rameshwaran (Karthi), a corrupt police officer. The film explores his journey as he adopts an alter ego inspired by MGR to fight against corruption and injustice. It also features Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Nizhalgal Ravi, Anandaraj, Shilpa Manjunath, and Karunakaran. One would recall that Balakrishna's Akhanda 2 recently faced the same fate and was postponed until an overdue payment of the banner was paid off.
