'Worst experience of my life': Anurag on 'Bombay Velvet' failure

Entertainment

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared how the flop of his 2015 film Bombay Velvet was "the worst experience of my life."
Despite a star cast and big budget, the movie tanked at the box office and left him dealing with a lot of negativity.

Why the filmmaker called it a trauma

Kashyap revealed that Bombay Velvet's high budget of ₹90 crore led to creative compromises and loss of control.
He admitted, "If I could have owned this failure, this film wouldn't have been a trauma for me."
Producer pressure for last-minute cuts weakened the story.

Now, he only makes films with small budgets

After this setback, Kashyap said he now keeps budgets small—dropping from ₹90 crore to just ₹3.5 crore—to protect his creative freedom.
He also stressed how crucial it is for producers to trust filmmakers instead of chasing box office numbers over quality.
