Yung Gecko on independent musicians and labels
What's the story
Yung Gecko, who is currently enjoying the success of his projects, Time and Spain released in November and December 2020 respectively, says that musicians rushing to be signed by labels at the beginning of their careers lose control over their music.
Yung Gecko believes that a label can take advantage of an artist's talent and potential for their own monetary agenda.
Details
Yung Gecko unwilling to give up freedom as independent artist
While being independent certainly involves a higher workload for the artist, it, in turn, offers a higher reward for musicians who are able to make it out of the "starting" stage.
To Yung Gecko, being able to collect all of his streaming royalties himself and having the freedom to release music whenever he wants is something he would never give up.
Inspiration
Independent artists' journey might be strenuous but is worth it
Yung Gecko, whose second song Quiet Thots released during the summer amassed over 600,000 total streams, enjoys creating music when he is inspired and does not want to be rushed by an outside force, such as a label to meet their monetary quota.
Being an independent artist, he says, might be a strenuous journey, but the end result is worth the initial struggle.
Success
'Time' and 'Spain' are touching one million views each
After releasing his first two successful singles, he decided to start posting music more often and that's when he released Time and Spain, which have almost reached one million streams each.
With such a successful debut, his plans for the coming years are to continue releasing singles, and possibly an album with his fan base continuing to grow at such a high rate.
