#MumbaiTerrorAttacks: 5 images of 26/11 that every Indian remembers

Ten years ago, on this day, terrorists from Pakistan attacked the financial capital of India, Mumbai, killing more than 150 people and injuring hundreds more. On the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai Terror Attacks, India paid tribute to those brave soldiers who were killed fighting the terrorists. As we remember the horror, here is looking at five pictures that tell the tale.

Kasab, the only terrorist who could be captured alive

This iconic photo of terrorist Ajmal Kasab at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was clicked by Sebastian D'Souza, a photo editor who worked with Mumbai Mirror. The courage that D'Souza showed in the face of tremendous danger is extraordinary. It's easy to insult journalists these days, but one should always remember the great risks they take sometimes just to bring some facts to you.

Covered in smoke: That's how we remember the Taj Hotel

The pride of Mumbai, the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, was the epicenter of the 26/11 attacks in 2008. This photo was taken on November 27 when the firefighters were attempting to put out a blaze. Thirty-one people, who didn't know their fate that day, died inside the hotel, including the brave staff members, who were trying to guide the guests to safety.

Just a glimpse of the aftermath

In this picture taken at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on November 26, a policeman can be seen guiding an old man to safety. The terminus was one of the targets during the attacks. Terrorists, Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail, killed almost 60 people and wounded over 100 at the station. Violence, unleashed by the Pakistani terrorists, can be seen clearly in this picture.

Security forces used all means to flush out the terrorists

On November 28, when access to the Nariman House, where the terrorists were hiding, was becoming impossible for the security forces, National Security Guard commandos came down a rope, from a helicopter to reach the top of Nariman House. The battle between the security personnel and terrorists went on for two days and ended with the death of two terrorists and five hostages.

Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare getting ready for operation

Hemant Karkare, the then Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad chief, was killed in action after being shot in the chest during the 26/11 terror attacks. This iconic picture shows the 26/11 hero getting ready for the operation. The brave cop was killed in the fight with terrorists along with Senior Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Ashok Kamte that day.
