Assam: 8 elephants die as Rajdhani Express hits herd

India

Early Saturday in Assam's Hojai district, a Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express train hit a herd of elephants, leaving eight dead and one injured.
The crash happened at 2:17am causing the engine and five coaches to derail—but thankfully, all passengers and staff were unharmed.

What happened next?

The accident took place near Changjurai. Forest officials rushed over right after, confirmed divisional forest officer Suhash Kadam.
The train was headed from Mizoram to Delhi.

How did it affect travel?

Train services on this route were thrown off schedule—coaches had to be detached and trains rerouted while crews worked to clear the tracks.
By 6:11am the Rajdhani was back on its way with extra coaches planned soon.
Railways say they're working hard to get things running normally again.
