Haryana cancels over 11 lakh ration cards—here's what's going on

India

Haryana has canceled more than 11 lakh ration cards between October 2024 and 2025, cutting the total from about 52 lakh to just over 40 lakh.
The move comes following a sharp increase in new cards in the year leading up to the November 2024 elections and is meant to make sure only families who really qualify get subsidized food grains under government schemes.

Fewer people getting wheat, new rules for eligibility

With these cancelations, both wheat supply and the number of beneficiaries have dropped—wheat distribution fell from over one lakh metric tons in January to around 86,000 by October, and fewer families are now covered.
To keep things fair, Haryana also raised the income limit for getting a ration card from ₹1.2 lakh to ₹1.8 lakh per year, so only those who truly need help can apply.
