Assam: Rajdhani Express hits elephant herd, 7 elephants killed
A heartbreaking accident happened in Assam when the Rajdhani Express train hit a herd of elephants crossing the tracks.
Seven Asiatic elephants lost their lives and a calf was injured.
The collision was so strong it derailed five coaches and the engine, but thankfully, all passengers were safe.
Those in undamaged coaches kept going to Delhi, while about 200 others from derailed sections were taken to Guwahati.
Assam's ongoing struggle with train-elephant accidents
Assam is home to around 7,000 wild elephants, and sadly, train collisions like this aren't new hereāat least a dozen elephants have died since 2020.
Most incidents happen during harvest season when elephants wander closer to people looking for food.
This accident wasn't even in an official elephant corridor, highlighting just how urgent better rail safety for wildlife has become.
