Bhure Lal: News

Bhure Lal is an ex-army man and retired IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He has been the Chairman of the Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) for over two decades. Lal has a PhD in Economics and has served in the Indian Army for seven years, from 1963 to 1970. Subsequently, he joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and was appointed the District Magistrate for Allahabad and Varanasi. He formed a close association with the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister VP Singh during his time as the latter’s secretary. When Singh became the Prime Minister of India, Lal became a Joint Secretary in the PMO. He has also served as the Chief of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and as Secretary in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Lal famously led the probe in the 1986 Bofors deal scandal and went after the top businessmen who evaded taxes and committed violations of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA). As the EPCA chief in 2002, he spearheaded the campaign to switch public vehicles from diesel to the cleaner Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Lal is seen as an anti-corruption crusader and an efficient administrator who is both honest and decisive. He is also a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra.
