Barber thrashed, forced to lick saliva for entering Sarpanch's house

What's the story

In an awful incident, a 54-year-old barber was beaten up and made to spit and lick his saliva off the ground in Biharsharif of Bihar's Nalanda, CM Nitish Kumar's home district. He was punished for allegedly entering Ajaypur Panchayat Sarpanch Surendra Yadav's house in the evening when no men were present. Police named eight persons, including Yadav, in an FIR. Here's more!

Nalanda District Magistrate, SM Thyiagrajan, said: "The victim has confirmed the incident. A thorough inquiry has been ordered and action will be taken on the report received." He added Biharsharif Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Sudhir Kumar was asked to visit the spot and gather details.

Victim claims he was unaware only women were present

The barber, Mahesh Thakur, said that he wasn't aware that only the female members of the family were home at the time he visited. Sarpanch Surendra Yadav was reportedly infuriated by the barber's actions and called for a panchayat meeting the next day to decide on the punishment for Thakur, for his "audacity". The women were asked to beat the man with slippers.

Nalanda DM Thyiagrajan stated: "He (Mahesh Thakur) perhaps went to the house of Sarpanch on Wednesday evening for tobacco when no male member was present." However, some reports claimed the barber wanted to meet Sarpanch Surendra Yadav for availing some government scheme.

Reactions

No place for such incidents in civilized society: Bihar Minister

Nalanda SP Sudhir Kumar Podika said Noorsarai SHO has been directed to inspect the matter and take strict action against the culprits. BJP leader and Bihar Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav said, "Strong action will be taken against the culprits to prevent any recurrence," adding such incidents wouldn't be tolerated. The incident was condemned strongly on social media after its video went viral.
