Chandigarh woman's suicide sparks dowry harassment case

A 24-year-old woman from Pratapgarh, UP, died by suicide at her Chandigarh home just months after getting married.
Her family says she faced constant mental cruelty and taunts over dowry from her husband and in-laws.
Police have registered a dowry death case against five family members under Section 80 (dowry death) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

'Note blaming in-laws for pushing her to this step'

Before her death on June 21, she sent a distress call and WhatsApp message to her father—including a suicide note blaming her in-laws for pushing her to this step.
The police are treating it as a dowry death (considered homicide if it happens within seven years of marriage).
Investigators are reviewing her final messages; the case is active as authorities work to enforce anti-dowry laws.
