Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall forecast in parts of Northeast, eastern India
What's the story
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms in Delhi and adjoining areas, along with heavy rainfall in parts of the Northeast and eastern India. The forecast comes as fears of a deficit monsoon grow stronger with the onset of El Niño conditions. Satellite images show monsoon clouds moving from the Bay of Bengal to Myanmar, Thailand, parts of Northeast India, Bhutan, and China.

Heavy rainfall expected in northeast, Bihar and West Bengal
The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across the Northeast till June 21. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive very heavy rainfall from June 18-21, while Assam and Meghalaya will likely experience similar weather from June 17-21. Bihar and West Bengal are also likely to witness heavy rain during the week.

Monsoon to advance in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Odisha
The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, and other states in the next four to five days. Meanwhile, Mumbai is expected to have partly cloudy skies with hot and humid conditions for the next 48 hours. Light rain may occur during late-night and early-morning hours in the city.

Delhi to see rise in maximum temperature
Delhi is likely to see partly cloudy skies with light rain and thunderstorms. Winds could gust up to 60km/h in the afternoon and evening. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to rise from 38-40°C on Monday to 40-42°C by June 18. Scattered rainfall is expected across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh during this week.
Southern forecast
Heatwave conditions may persist in isolated pockets of Telangana
Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and Telangana are likely to see widespread rainfall this week. Heavy rains are expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till June 18. Isolated heavy showers may be seen in Kerala and Mahe on June 16. Heatwave conditions may persist in isolated pockets of Telangana on June 16 and Vidarbha during June 16-17.
