Delhi raises EWS income limit for free hospital treatment to ₹5 lakh

India

Delhi just bumped up the annual income cap for economically weaker section (EWS) patients from ₹2.2 lakh to ₹5 lakh, making it easier for more people to get free treatment at private hospitals partnered with the government.
This change follows a High Court order and a review by a special committee.

Why should you care?

Now, the income limit for free healthcare matches what's used for EWS school admissions—so things are finally consistent.
With over 1,000 free beds available across 62 hospitals, more low-income families can actually access quality medical care without worrying about bills.
As advocate Ashok Agarwal put it, patients can "walk in free and walk out free."
The government says it'll make sure hospitals stick to these rules so help really reaches those who need it most.
