Earthquake of 3.6 magnitude strikes Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir felt a 3.6 magnitude earthquake on Saturday evening, according to the National Center for Seismology.
The quake hit around 7:36pm at a depth of nine kilometers.
Thankfully, officials say there were no injuries or property damage.
Previous earthquakes in the region
This isn't an isolated event—in April 2023, a stronger quake hit Pakistan with tremors reaching Srinagar and Jammu, but again, no harm was done.
In March, Kargil in Ladakh also experienced shaking from a 5.2 magnitude quake that was felt across J&K but caused no damage.
J&K sits in a high-risk area for earthquakes
Jammu and Kashmir sits in Seismic Zone IV—a high-risk area for earthquakes as per India's standards.
That means quakes like these aren't rare, so local planning generally focuses on safety measures and building codes to help keep people safe when the ground moves.
