Finalizing administrative boundaries for 2027 Census

India's next Census is coming in 2027, and the government wants all states and Union Territories to lock in their district, tehsil, village, and police station boundaries by December 31, 2025.
From January 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, no more changes allowed—this helps make sure everyone gets counted correctly.

TL;DR

Census to be conducted in 2 phases

The Census will roll out in two phases: first tracking housing details from April 1, 2026, then counting people and collecting key data from February 1, 2027.
Over 34 lakh enumerators will use mobile apps this time.
For the first time in almost a century, caste data will be collected too—expected to shape future policies and reservations.

Numbers will help redraw parliamentary seats

Once the numbers are in, they'll guide how parliamentary seats might be redrawn or increased—and could help implement women's reservation in Parliament.
This is India's first Census since 2011 and sets the stage for some big decisions ahead.
