Fugitive Mehul Choksi's extradition to India cleared by Belgian court
A Belgian court has just cleared the way for fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi to be sent back to India.
This is a major step for Indian authorities, who've been after him for his alleged role in the massive ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam.
Choksi was arrested in Belgium in April after India pushed for his extradition.
Choksi's nephew Nirav Modi also facing extradition from UK
The CBI went all out—making multiple trips to Belgium and even hiring a European law firm to build their case. They presented evidence of six bank frauds Choksi allegedly pulled off between 2018 and 2022.
Indian officials promised he'd be held at Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail with conditions matching European standards. Choksi still says he's Antiguan, but Indian authorities insist he's an Indian citizen.
He can still appeal this decision in a higher Belgian court, and meanwhile, his nephew Nirav Modi is also facing extradition from the UK.
