Howrah: 3 schoolchildren die as van plunges into pond

India

A heartbreaking incident shook Uluberia, Howrah on Monday when a school van carrying five kids from Mother Marina Mission School veered off the road and plunged into a pond around 3pm.
Locals rushed in and managed to save two children who were sitting in front, but sadly, three others couldn't be revived.

What happened next

The three children, aged between 7 and 11, were found unconscious and declared dead at Sarat Chandra Medical College.
The van driver, Simanto Bag—who reportedly had heart surgery recently—has been arrested as police look into whether a health issue or mechanical failure caused the crash.
Eyewitnesses say the van was speeding on empty roads.
Local leaders visited the hospital to support the families while police continue their investigation.
