The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for parts of Maharashtra, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. The alert is especially for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg from October 3-7. Wind speeds are expected to reach 45-55km/h with gusts up to 65km/h along the north Maharashtra coast between October 3 and 5.

The IMD has warned of very rough to high sea conditions along the northern Maharashtra coast till October 5. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea during this period. The cyclone's outer bands are likely to bring heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, especially East Vidarbha and Marathwada, which may lead to flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan.

Maharashtra government on high alert
The Maharashtra government is on high alert and has directed district administrations to activate disaster management systems. They have been asked to prepare evacuation plans for coastal and low-lying areas, issue public advisories, advise against sea travel, and ensure safety during heavy rains. Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts have been put on a yellow alert.

Cyclone Shakti intensifying in Arabian Sea
As of Friday morning, Cyclone "Shakti" was located about 270km southwest of Naliya in Gujarat and was moving northwestwards at a speed of around 8km/h. The system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday before tracking west-southwestwards toward the central Arabian Sea by October 5. Although no landfall is expected, forecasters warn of turbulent seas and heavy rainfall along coastal regions.

The IMD has already predicted above-normal rainfall for Maharashtra in October. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of Meteorology, had earlier said that October will likely see increased rainfall activity. With Cyclone Shakti forming in the Arabian Sea, authorities are bracing for more heavy rains, especially in coastal and interior districts. Residents of coastal areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hour,s while those in flood-prone areas are urged to evacuate if needed.
