India and Afghanistan just launched direct air trade routes
India and Afghanistan are kicking off new air freight corridors connecting Kabul with Delhi and Amritsar, announced during Afghan Commerce Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi's recent visit to New Delhi.
These cargo flights—set to start soon—will help both countries reconnect after Pakistan's airspace closure restricted direct air cargo trade by Indian carriers.
What's in it for both sides?
Afghanistan gets a lifeline for exporting things like fresh produce and high-value goods, which used to move by air until recently.
In exchange, they're hoping for steady supplies of grains, medicines, and industrial products from India since land routes are still blocked.
More than just flights: building stronger ties
Both governments are bringing back their Joint Working Group on Trade and will have commercial reps at each other's embassies.
With trade already near $1 billion, these moves could mean more business—and closer ties—for both nations.
