India bans foreign fishing boats in its waters

India

India just banned foreign boats from fishing in its massive Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to help local fishers and keep marine life healthy.
From now on, only Indian mechanized and large motorized boats with free Access Passes (via the ReALCRaft portal) can operate here.
The new rules also ban harmful methods like LED light fishing and pair trawling.

Why this matters

This move matters because India's EEZ is huge—2.3 million sq km—and supports over five million people along the coast.
By focusing on sustainable practices, supporting fisher cooperatives, and boosting seafood traceability for exports, these changes aim to protect ocean resources while helping coastal communities thrive.
It's about balancing conservation with better livelihoods for millions who depend on the sea.
