India wants 100GW nuclear power by 2047—big law changes coming
India is gearing up to revamp its nuclear laws this winter, aiming for a massive leap to 100GW of nuclear power by 2047.
The new Atomic Energy Bill, 2025 will update old rules from the '60s and 2010, clearing the way for more modern—and ambitious—nuclear projects.
Making space for private players and new tech
The planned changes will open doors for private companies and even foreign partners to join in on nuclear projects, not just government-run ones.
This could mean faster growth and cool innovations like small modular reactors (SMRs), which take up less space than traditional plants.
Right now, India has 24 reactors totaling about 8.78 GW, but with big names like Tata Power and Vedanta showing interest, nuclear energy is expected to play a much bigger role by 2047 alongside solar and wind in India's future energy mix.
