Indian graduates struggle with job-skill mismatch: Report

According to a report by the Institute for Competitiveness, just 8.25% of Indian graduates actually work in jobs that fit their qualifications.
Most end up in lower-skilled roles like clerks or sales staff, showing a big gap between what people study and the work they find.

TL;DR

High-skill workers also stuck in lower-skilled roles

While about 63% of high-skill workers have jobs that match their education, nearly a third are still stuck in lower-skilled positions.
On the flip side, some low-skill workers get by with informal skills or vocational training instead of formal degrees.

Worrying numbers from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh

States like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh have over 60% of their workforce in low-skill jobs.
High-skill qualifications are rare—just over 2% nationwide—and aren't spread evenly across states.
Closing this gap could almost double wages for many.

Revamp education and training, says report

The survey says there's an urgent need to revamp education and training so students actually gain skills employers want.
Better skill mapping and updated job data could help more grads find work they're trained for—and make those years at college really count.
