Winter is here: Srinagar witnesses lowest temperature of the season

    What's the story

With winter setting in, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, recorded its lowest temperature of the season on Sunday.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperature in Srinagar dropped to a freezing minus 2.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, cold conditions are gripping J&K, and the Ladakh region and Kashmir valley are seeing below-freezing point temperatures.

    Here's more.

    Pahalgam, Gulmarg

Amarnath base camp Pahalgam also records freezing temperatures

While Srinagar was freezing, the Pahalgam health resort recorded a temperature of minus 5.1 degree Celsius - the lowest recorded so far in the Kashmir valley region this season.

Pahalgam is not just a popular tourist destination, but serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir.

Temperature in the ski-resort of Gulmarg was minus 3.4 degrees Celsius.

    Ladakh region

Leh is the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir

However, even Pahalgam's freezing temperatures paled in comparison to temperatures in Leh, in the Ladakh region of the state.

Mercury in Leh touched a low of minus 9.3 degrees Celsius, while the nearby Kargil recorded a temperature of minus 9 degrees Celsius.

Leh was the coldest recorded place in the state of Jammu & Kashmir this winter season.

    Do you know?

Leh breaches the minus 20 degrees Celsius mark frequently

In January temperatures in Leh often cross the minus 20 degrees Celsius mark. The lowest temperature ever record in Leh is minus 28.3 degrees Celsius.
