Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal's wife passes away
Anita Goyal, wife of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, succumbed to cancer in the early hours of Thursday. She passed away around 3:00am at a hospital in Mumbai after a prolonged battle with the disease. Survived by her husband and their two children, Namrata and Nivaan Goyal, Anita had been an integral part of Jet Airways's operations as the executive vice president.
Naresh's health and legal troubles
Naresh, also battling cancer and multiple other health issues, was at their Mumbai residence when his wife passed away. Earlier this month, he had sought interim bail from the Bombay High Court on humanitarian grounds to be with his ailing wife. Goyal was arrested in September 2023 in connection with a money-laundering case and is currently lodged at the Arthur Road Central Jail (ARCJ).
Allegations against Jet Airways founder and his defense
Goyal is facing allegations of misappropriating loans amounting to ₹538.62 crore provided to Jet Airways by Canara Bank. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused Jet Airways of diverting around ₹1,152 crore in the guise of consultancy and professional fees and ₹2,547.83 crore to a sister concern, Jet Lite Limited, to clear its loan. In his bail plea, Goyal claimed that he did not siphon off loan amounts for personal benefits as alleged by the ED.
