J&K news websites blocked in India over Iran protests: Report
Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) has blocked the accounts of top Jammu and Kashmir news outlets like Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir, and Kashmir Life.
This move came right after protests broke out following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader on February 28.
The block was requested by law enforcement under India's IT Act.
Local politicians call out Meta
Local politicians are calling out Meta for what they see as an attack on press freedom. Mehbooba Mufti called it a blow to free speech and urged authorities to restore access.
Meta said the pages "were restricted under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000" and that access was restricted "at the request of law enforcement authorities."
Social media has faced criticism for spreading misinformation, with the J&K Police warning about and investigating the circulation of false or misleading information on electronic and social media.
