Justice Dipankar Datta highlights obstacles in judicial appointments
Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta called out "external forces" for holding up judicial appointments, saying it's not just about judges picking judges.
At an event in Nagpur, he shared how a six-year delay in appointing a Calcutta High Court advocate showed outside interference is real.
'Merit must be the only criterion'
Justice Datta urged Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai to step in and push for faster appointments, insisting that "merit must be the only criterion."
He reflected on earlier times when deserving candidates missed out on promotions but noted things are getting better now—pointing to recent transparent appointments like that of Justice Atul Chandurkar.
'Draggin out these decisions can open door to judicial adventurism'
Datta also warned that dragging out these decisions can open the door to "judicial adventurism."
CJI Gavai echoed his focus on merit and transparency, promising more direct conversations with candidates during the selection process.
