What's the story

An autopsy report obtained by India Today has shed light on the final moments of the postgraduate trainee doctor before she was suffocated to death at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The autopsy report revealed that the victim had suffered extensive injuries prior to her death. The report also indicated evidence of forceful penetration, suggesting a sexual assault had occurred.

Injuries

Autopsy details over 14 injuries, indicates sexual assault

The autopsy report documented over 14 injuries on the victim's head, face, neck, arms, and genitals. The cause of death was determined to be "manual strangulation associated with smothering." The autopsy report also noted the presence of a "white, thick, viscid liquid" in the victim's genitalia. "As noted. White thick viscid (viscous) liquid present inside the endocervical canal, which is collected as noted above. Wt-151 gm," Newslaundry quoted the report.

What Wt-151 gm means

The media watchdog said it spoke to autopsy experts, who clarified that "Wt-151 gm" refers to the weight of the vagina (meaning the genital tract that connects the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus) collected from the victim's body. This debunks earlier claims by the victims' parents and media reports that 150 grams/milligrams of semen were found in the victim.

Medical findings

Autopsy report notes hemorrhaging, no signs of fractures

There was also hemorrhaging in the lungs and blood clots throughout the body. However, there were no signs of fractures. Samples of blood and other bodily fluids were sent for further analysis to aid in the ongoing investigation. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after the incident. The Calcutta High Court later transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case will be heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
