Maharashtra dam storage at 24.53% prompts government drinking water directive
India
Maharashtra's dams are running low, with storage dropping to just 24.53%, a sharp fall from last year's 30.78%.
The delayed monsoon is making things tough, so the government has told officials to focus on keeping drinking water available at least until August 31.
Pune is hit hardest with only 14.41% storage, while Amaravati is doing best at nearly 38%.
Maharashtra deploys 999 water tankers
With less water in reservoirs, more tankers are being sent out: 999 now compared to 868 a week earlier (though still less than last June).
Right now, these tankers are serving over 900 villages and thousands of small hamlets.
If the rains don't show up soon, there's real concern about how long this stopgap can last.
