Maharashtra hikes tax on luxury cars
Starting today, Maharashtra is hiking the one-time registration tax for luxury and commercial vehicles.
If you're eyeing a petrol or diesel car over ₹20 lakh, get ready—the tax cap now goes up to ₹30 lakh.
For high-end cars (think ₹1.5 crore), this could mean paying more than ₹20 lakh just in taxes.
How the old rates stacked up
Petrol cars under ₹10 lakh will be taxed at 11%, those between ₹10-20 lakh at 12%, and anything above ₹20 lakh at 13%.
Diesel cars are even steeper: 13% for under ₹10 lakh, 14% for mid-range, and a hefty 15% if you go premium.
Imported or company-registered vehicles face a flat 20% rate, while CNG/LNG models get an extra one percent added on top.
What's the new rate for light goods vehicles?
If you're in logistics or construction: light goods vehicles up to 7,500kg now face a seven percent tax—so that pickup worth ₹10 lakh jumps from about ₹20k in taxes to nearly ₹70k.
On the bright side, electric vehicles stay fully exempt after the state dropped its earlier plan to tax pricier EVs.
So if you want to dodge these hikes altogether, going electric is still your best bet.
