Maoists ask for more time to lay down arms in 3 states

India

Maoist leaders have formally requested until January 1, 2026, to surrender their weapons in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
In a letter to the state chief ministers, they also asked for anti-Maoist operations to be paused during this period, saying they need more time because of communication issues within their group.

Why does it matter?

This move comes after major setbacks for the Maoists, including key leaders being killed or surrendering.
A coordinated surrender is expected to seriously weaken the movement and could help bring stability and development back to these regions—something that's been tough for years due to ongoing violence.
If successful, it could also support the government's goal of ending Left-wing extremism by March 31, 2026.
