Mizoram prepares for biometric enrollment of Myanmar refugees

Mizoram is rolling out a new system this month to register over 32,000 Myanmar refugees across its districts.
Using the Foreigner Identification Portal, officials will collect both biometric and personal details—think fingerprints and basic info—to better keep track of who's living where.
District teams have already been trained and set up with the needed gear.

Enrollment for identification, not repatriation

Officials made it clear: this enrollment is only for identification, not for sending anyone back.
The process could later include Bangladeshi nationals if the central government asks.
Refugee numbers are always shifting since people often cross borders—right now, Aizawl district alone hosts about 3,000 Myanmar refugees who mostly fled after the 2021 military coup.
