Monsoon mayhem: Over 1,200 trees fell in Bengaluru this year
This monsoon, Bengaluru saw over twice as many tree falls as last year—1,222 trees were uprooted and 2,585 branches snapped between May and September this year.
Sadly, these incidents led to three deaths and six injuries, putting the spotlight on public safety during the city's rainy season.
Why the spike in tree falls?
Experts blame rapid urban growth and poor planning.
Former forest secretary A.N. Yellappa Reddy pointed out that contractors aren't trained well, and careless root cutting plus bad canopy management have left trees weak.
Environmental activist Dattatraya Devare added that unscientific pruning and concrete around tree bases make things worse.
With just 20 officials overseeing Bengaluru's huge green cover, and even some forest officials facing cases for neglect this year, it's clear the city needs better tree care and accountability.
