Mullaperiyar dam nearly full, water being released to avoid disaster

India

The Mullaperiyar dam, operated by Tamil Nadu, is now just 7.8 feet below its maximum limit of 142 feet.
To keep things safe, the dam is letting out more water than it's taking in.
The nearby Vaigai dam is also nearly full, sitting at 67.91 feet out of a possible 71.

Rainfall across the region

Rainfall across the region is driving these rising water levels—Elumalai saw over 45mm of rain and Mullaperiyar itself got 30mm in just one day.
Thanks to this rain, Periyar's total storage is nearly 9,886 million cubic feet.
