Mumbai's air turns 'severe' as smog thickens across the city

India

Mumbai's air quality has taken a hit, with Friday's AQI hitting 226—officially in the "unhealthy" zone.
Wadala truck port saw an especially worrying spike at 396, and other areas like BKC, Malad, Mazgaon, and Navy Nagar Colaba also reported 'severe' air quality with AQI remaining above 201.
The main culprits? Ground-level ozone—mostly from traffic and industries in places like Chembur and Trombay.

Why should you care?

High pollution isn't just numbers—it raises real health risks for everyone, especially kids, older folks, or anyone with asthma or heart issues.
Breathing this air can make lung problems worse or trigger heart troubles.
Authorities are urging people to mask up outside, use air purifiers indoors if possible, and cut down on outdoor activities when the smog is bad.

What needs to change?

Experts say Mumbai urgently needs tighter rules on vehicle emissions and industrial pollution.
They're pushing for more public transport use and cleaner industry practices so that breathing easy in Mumbai isn't just wishful thinking.
