Nithari killer acquitted by SC after 19 years in jail

India

Surendra Koli, once convicted in the chilling 2006 Nithari serial killings—where several children were abducted, raped, and murdered in Noida—has been acquitted by the Supreme Court.
After nearly 19 years behind bars in connection with the Nithari murders, Koli was released from prison on November 12.
The case had shocked the country when skeletal remains of at least eight minors were found at his employer's house.

SC's ruling on Koli's confession and evidence issues

The Supreme Court ruled that Koli's confession wasn't legally valid and there just wasn't enough solid evidence to keep him convicted.
Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had already acquitted him in 12 other cases because of weak investigations and missing proof.
This final acquittal highlights serious gaps in how such cases are handled—and leaves many still searching for justice for the Nithari victims.
