PM Modi honors Ethiopia's Adwa heroes in historic visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while visiting Addis Ababa, stopped by the Adwa Victory Memorial to pay his respects to those who fought in the legendary 1896 Battle of Adwa.
By laying a wreath, he recognized Ethiopia's fight for independence and highlighted how this moment still inspires anti-colonial pride today.
Why does Adwa matter?
The Battle of Adwa wasn't just another fight—it was when Ethiopian leaders Menelik II and Taytu Betul led their people to defeat Italian invaders, making Ethiopia one of the few African countries to resist colonization.
This victory forced Italy to back off and put Ethiopia on the map as a symbol of resilience.
What's at the memorial?
The modern memorial isn't just a statue—it's a whole museum complex with artifacts, old weapons, and vivid displays about Ethiopia's resistance.
There are also spaces for research and culture, making it a living tribute that keeps history relevant for new generations.
