President Murmu honors tribal warriors on Hul Diwas
On June 30, President Droupadi Murmu honored the Santhal leaders who led a bold uprising against British rule back in 1855-56.
Sido and Kanhu Murmu from Jharkhand's Bhognadih village sparked this fight, standing up to colonial oppression and unfair landlords.
Tribute to heroes of rebellion
President Murmu paid respects to Sido, Kanhu, Chand, Bhairav, and sisters Phoolo and Jhano—acknowledging their bravery as thousands of Santhals joined the rebellion.
With support from other communities, they fought guerrilla-style battles across hundreds of villages.
Hul Diwas reminds us of fight for justice
Though the rebellion was crushed, it exposed harsh colonial exploitation and led to creating the Santhal Parganas district.
Hul Diwas now stands as a reminder of early tribal resistance and the ongoing fight for justice.
