On Gandhi Jayanti, Railways' coaches to bear Swachch Bharat logo

To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, all the coaches of the Indian Railways will display the logo of the government's pet project 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyan' and the national flag. Some 43 stations having special association with Gandhi will be painted thematically. Also, saplings will be planted alongside the Railways tracks, said officials. All these need to be completed by Gandhi Jayanti, October 2.

Massive cleanliness drives in 28 stations; 43 to be painted

Railway officials said the 'Swachchta Pakhwara' would be held from September 15-October 2. Starting October till the next six months, stations like Lucknow, Mumbai, Surat, Danapur, Asansol, Bengaluru, Vadodara will be painted based on themes, such as sanitation, non-violence, voluntary community service, communal unity, removal of untouchability, and women empowerment. Also, 28 iconic stations like Puri, Amritsar, Haridwar, Kurukshetra, will see massive cleanliness drives.

Approaches to Golden Triangle region to be given special focus

The Railways board has specifically instructed that cleanliness on the approaches to Golden Triangle region-to and from Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, should be given special focus. It has also sent out orders to plant trees alongside tracks, and for this both serving and retired officials have to participate. Further, all administrative offices, zonal and divisional headquarters should have "murals of Gandhiji with his quotes".

No non-vegetarian food to be served on Gandhi Jayanti

This might not be the end of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations for the Railways. They have also planned to serve vegetarian food to passengers on Railways premises on that day. This plan will also be levied on October 2, 2019 and 2020, said officials. Tickets bearing Gandhi's watermark might also be issued, but all these are subjected to approval of Ministry of Culture.
