Rajdhani Express derails after hitting elephants in Assam

India

Early Friday morning, the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with a herd of elephants in Assam, causing the engine and five coaches to derail about 126km from Guwahati.
While the crash was serious, all passengers escaped unharmed.

What happened next?

Passengers from the damaged coaches were safely moved to other parts of the train, which continued on to Guwahati after leaving behind the wrecked sections.
Sadly, several elephants died, with seven elephants - three adults and four calves - dying in the accident.
Relief teams rushed in for cleanup and repairs.

Why this matters

The accident didn't happen on an official elephant corridor—officials say the driver hit emergency brakes as soon as he saw the herd.
The fallout led to major train delays across the region and a full investigation ordered by Assam's Chief Minister.
This incident highlights how wildlife and railways can collide—sometimes with heartbreaking results.
