Son skips mother's last rites for wedding, sparking debate
In Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, a man chose not to collect his late mother's body from an old-age home because he was busy with a wedding at home.
Shobha Devi, who'd been unwell and living at the shelter, passed away on November 19.
Her son asked staff to keep her body in a deep freezer for four days, as bringing the body home during the wedding would be inauspicious.
Family tensions and questions about responsibility
Shobha's husband shared that family fights last year led to their elder son kicking them out, forcing them into the old-age home.
While he wanted to delay the last rites until after the wedding, other relatives insisted on bringing her back to Gorakhpur.
The shelter owner mentioned no one from the family visited Shobha during her stay, highlighting how easily elders can be sidelined.
Eventually, she was brought home—but only for a temporary burial—raising tough questions about how families treat their elders today.
