Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana adds 2.3 million rooftop solar systems
India is gearing up to install 2.3 million more rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by next March.
Touted as the world's largest rooftop renewable energy scheme, it already covers 5 million homes, with the government footing 40% of installation costs from a ₹75,000 crore budget.
Surya Ghar records over 42.1 million installations
By August 6, 2026, the scheme had received 7.5 million applications and completed over 42.1 million installations.
States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh are leading the charge.
According to MNRE Joint Secretary BVN Subramanyam, efforts from banks and vendors have made financing easier, and the initiative has created 500,000 green jobs so far.
With about 20,000 new systems going up daily, clean energy is getting more accessible for households across India.
