Tamil Nadu Minister defends English as global progress tool
Tamil Nadu's Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent comments that English speakers in India might one day feel ashamed.
Poyyamozhi argued that English isn't just for the elite—it helps open up global opportunities and supports marginalized communities.
He pointed out how countries like China and Germany have used English to get ahead in science and tech.
DMK's pushback against NEP
Poyyamozhi is advocating for a dual-language approach: English for opportunity, Tamil for identity.
His stance comes as the DMK continues to push back against the BJP's National Education Policy, which they say favors Hindi over other languages.
The DMK has also flagged concerns about too few Tamil teachers being appointed in central schools, seeing it as part of a bigger debate over language and culture in education.
